Lizzie Deignan Scoops the Win at National Road Championships

This is her fourth win of the title in seven years...

We’ve been pretty excited to see how the National Road Championships would unfold in the wake of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour which took place earlier this month.

With 79 of the best British riders from across the country lined up to start, the 103km race got underway on Sunday morning as the peloton headed out from Douglas in the Isle of Man.

Women’s peloton forced to pull over to let men’s race pass

Attacks came swiftly after the start of the race with a number of riders seeking to gain an advantage over the pack. The first attempt to break free came from Paralympic silver medallist Crystal Lane-Wright (Aprire Bicycles/HSS Hire) but failed to hold a position.

With various attempts to break away from the peloton, it was Track World Champion, Elinor Barker, who put her foot down and set off solo with 35km to go. Not one to let a rider get too far, a frustrated Lizzie Deignan (Boels-Dolmans) formed a chasing group with Hannah Barnes (Canyon//SRAM) and Katie Archibald (Team WNT).

In the closing kilometres of the race, the chasing group caught Barker but a moment later, Lizzie kicked up a notch and sprinted for the win.

A great result for the British rider as she adds the win to her Tour de Yorkshire victory earlier in the year.

Here are the final results:

1. Lizzie Deignan (GBr) Boels-Dolmans, in 2-44-18
2. Katie Archibald (GBr) Team WNT, at 14 secs
3. Hannah Barnes (GBr) Canyon-SRAM, at same time
4. Elinor Barker (GBr) Matrix Pro Cycling, at 17 secs
5. Melissa Lowther (GBr) Team Breeze, at 1-28 (under-23 champion)
