Giro Rosa Stage 9: Marta Bastianelli Wins Penultimate Stage of the Giro Rosa

The penultimate stage saw an ambitious three-rider breakaway late into the course...

The ninth stage of the 18th annual Giro Rosa kicked off yesterday in Palinuro where the riders set out to cycle 141.8km to the finish in Palinuro.

To recap on Stage eight… We saw a strong peloton fractured towards the end of the stage on the cat climb. Two riders headed to the line neck-and-neck with a crash in the final 3km and with an extraordinary comeback, Lucinda Brand (Team Sunweb) took the win. Stage 9: Palinuro to Polla – 122.3 km

141 riders set out for the lumpy start of stage nine. The first hour of racing had the peloton remain together without any attacks attempted.

The action came at the 48km mark when roughly 50 riders were dropped and a break away made by a handful but this breakaway didn’t make it too far as they were caught 12km down the route. With the peloton together again, a few groups had fallen off the back some 4km down the way.

Jasinska, Kitchen and Trevisi made a break for it and maintained a lead over the peloton for a considerable length of the course as it closed to the final kilometres. With 20km left, the three leaders had a 60-second advantage, however, the break was caught in the final 3km resulting in a final sprint for the line where Marta Bastianelli (Alé Cipollini) took the stage win.
