We bring you the low-down on the brand spanking new (and very shiny) range of women’s specific MTBs from Juliana Bicycles, a company whose sole focus is making sure mountain biking women have the equipment they need.

The Furtado Primeiro is the top of the range, carbon framed dream machine.

Evolved from the highly successful Santa Cruz Juliana, one of the first female specific mountain bike ever developed, this high-end range is made up of 4 different bikes, with two or three model options of each. That makes this the largest range of women's MTBs out there.

Juliana have got most bases covered, from a hard tail ideal for zipping round your local trail centre to a carbon framed full suspension thing of beauty that will see you taking your riding off the beaten track and out into the wild.

Developed under the watchful eye of pro-MTB legend Juli Furtado, the aim is to make each rider feel like a queen of the mountains. With high-end, quality frames built by Santa Cruz, and their own bespoke parts and components, Juliana Bicycles have worked hard to ensure excellent fit and comfort for women.

I wanted each bike to be the most comfortable, it would perform the best and it would be the most beautiful. Those criteria I wanted on every single bike.

Show me the bikes! We've got them all here for you to peruse and enjoy, so get clicking. Be warned, you might want to hide your wallet - these bikes are highly tempting.

The aluminium model 29er is a sturdy, steady and speedy steed.

The components aren’t quite as flash as on the Primeiro model, but will more than do the job – and of course you can always upgrade parts as they wear out. The suspension on this bike is great; combine that amount of travel with those big wheels and you’ve got a bike that will make the rough feel smooth.

Juliana say;

We can't vouch that the Lord will buy you one... but Joplin certainly makes amends for the lack of high-end women's mountain bike options that went before.

[part title='Juliana Origin Premeiro - £2,599']

Juliana Bicycles origin primeiro 2013

This is the bike that was once the one and only Santa Cruz Juliana, hence the ‘where it all began...’ tag on the Juliana site.

One of the big selling points of the Origin range, apart from quality frame and components, is the sizing. There is an XS offering, suitable for riders from 4"8 to 5"1 – in a market place where there are limited options for smaller riders, this welcome indeed!

The S and M models – there is no L option – have 29er wheels, but to complement the smaller frame and corresponding parts, the XS runs with the traditional 26".

Juliana say;

This is where it started. First launched in 1999, the original Juliana model continues to evolve as the women’s reference for beautifully simple suspension design in smaller sizes.

Suspension; Fox Float 100mm rear shock, Fox Float 32 120mm front shock

Group set; Shimano Deore

Brakes; Shimano Deore

Wheel size; 29" on S and M, 26" on XS

Frame material; Aluminium

Sizes; XS (4"8 to 5"1), S (5"0 to 5"5), M (5"4 to 5"10)

Colour; Persimmon (a gloriously sunny orange) or Pearl White

[part title='Juliana Origin Segundo - £2,199']

Juliana Bicycles origin segundo 2013

The Origin Segundo is a bike to consider if you are looking to get your first full-sus. With a long history of design, modifications and tweaking behind it, it’s had consistently good reviews.

At home on the trails, whether you are blasting round Surrey after work, heading for a weekend in South Wales, or heading up for a week in Scotland, this bike should see you through.

Juliana say;

The extra small frame size comes with 26-inch wheels, keeping Origin as compact and nimble as possible for riders up to 5'1". 29-inch wheels grace the small and medium frame sizes, working in conjunction with the specially tuned suspension to ensure the ride stays smooth and momentum keeps pulling you forward.

Suspension; Fox Float 100mm rear shock, Rockshox Recon 120mm front shock

Group set; Shimano Deore

Brakes; Avid Elixir 1

Wheel size; 29" on S and M, 26" on XS

Juliana says;

Dirt debutant or mountain biking maven, Nevis delivers the signature Juliana experience in a lightweight package for women seeking smaller sizes.

Suspension; Fox Float 100mm front shock

Group set; Shimano SLX/Deore

Brakes; Shimano Deore

Wheel size; 29" on S and M, 26" on XS

[part title='Juliana Nevis Segundo - £1,799']

Juliana Bicycles nevis segundo 2013

Like the Origin range, the Nevis also comes in sizes XS to M, which combined with the Juliana’s signature compact handlebars and other design features should mean a comfortable and controlled ride, which in turns means way more fun.

Juliana says;

The medium and small frame sizes have 29-inch wheels, delivering all the high-rolling trail-smoothing benefits synonymous with the 29er movement. Meanwhile the extra-small frame size has 26-inch wheels to maintain low stand over and keep Nevis feeling compact, agile and confidence inspiring.

Suspension; Rockshox Recon 100mm front shock

[part title='Juliana Bicycles: The overview']

All the bikes have several key features that make them great for female riders, and are particular selling points for the range.

Smaller Sizes

The range of mountain bikes for smaller riders is limited, so with most models suitable for riders from 5 foot upwards, and the Origin and Nevis models suitable for riders from 4"8, Juliana Bicycles have some excellent offerings.

Handlebars and grips

Compact handlebars mean a more secure and comfier grip for smaller hands.

One of the major contact points when riding, and often an issue for smaller riders. The Juliana bikes all have compact handlebars and grips; narrower and thinner should mean a better, easier grip and greater comfort while riding.

Saddle

A female specific saddle with design details that complement the bikes.

Female specific saddles are something that comes as standard on the vast majority of women’s specific mountain bikes these days, and the Juliana’s are no exception. Their own saddle has several design features that complement the elements on the bikes perfectly, looks wise.

Wheel size and crank length

Many of the bikes in the ranges have smaller wheel sizes and complementary crank lengths for the smaller bikes. This makes them more comfortable and manoeuvrable at the smaller sizes; massive 29er wheels aren’t going to work on a size XS frame.

Lifetime crash replacement warranty

The Juliana bicycles use the highly regarded Santa Cruz frames, which means they benefit from a lifetime crash replacement warranty. This is good news as the bikes are a bit of an investment, and Santa Cruz have an excellent reputation for looking after their customers.

But what are they like to ride?

There are several demo days planned up and down the country, where you can have a proper gander and take on out for a spin. We’ll also be reviewing one of the bikes in the range - so watch this space.
