Another youthful city famed for its nightlife and outrageously good parties, Berlin is fast becoming one of the most popular cities for young people to see in the New Year despite the often harsh climes and crazily low temperatures.
Join in one of Europe’s biggest NYE street parties by nabbing yourself a spot somewhere between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column to watch the fireworks spectacular unveil. A programme of live bands and the city’s favourite DJs keep the crowds entertained in the lead up to midnight and plenty of street food stalls serving an array of dishes from all over the world are on hand to keep everyone’s bellies full.
The street party is free for all to attend and goes on into the early hours of the morning.
If you’re not too tired the next day, a cycle around the Tiergarten is a fun and refreshing way to start the New Year before choosing a restaurant to enjoy a hearty Berliner brunch in. Another favourite route (and a short one too) follows the East Side Gallery although this isn’t a great choice if you’re actually looking to get any exercise in as you’ll no doubt be stopping every three or four metres to admire the art.
For a slightly lengthier cycle route, pedal out of the city to the palace region of Potsdam 22 miles from Berlin. This is a beautiful little town and great for exploring with the whole family, making it a great destination for a full day trip by bicycle.
