What I thought was a shoe box turned out to be the packaging for the Assos H.FI.Lady_S5 women’s cycling shorts. That aside, once out of the box, the first noticeable feature of the shorts is the thickness of the chamois pad. It has an almost honeycomb feel, and after pulling them on, you can clearly see the hexagonal design through the fabric.
Until we’ve trialled the chamois pad in the saddle we can’t comment on comfort, although surprisingly, it doesn’t impinge on movement off the bike – even with it’s thickness, you’re not left feeling like you’re wearing a nappy.
As these are billed as long-distance training and racing shorts, I was expecting a ‘pro-cut’ but overall the initial fit was incredibly pleasing. With good leg length, thick elastic band and silicone dashes on the rear leg hem, the front hem utilising the leg material, folded and triple stitched, offering a flattering finish to keep the shorts in place on the thigh.
The waist is elasticated at the rear, and sits a lot higher than the front to keep you covered. A plain panel of lycra is used for the front waist band, which sits below the belly button and hugs but so far doesn’t dig into the waist.
An added extra touch that you’d expect of a product in this price range is that you get a washing bag to pop your shorts in when you put them in the machine, to stop them from stretching or pilling.
