Many cyclists like to shine the light on their favourite hobby both on and off the bike, and cycling themed clothing is one way to do that.
However, when one female cyclist found herself struggling to find casual wear she liked that expressed her passion, she decided to put her business skills to good use and launch a shop that would support charities, too.
Nic Fox describes herself as a ‘corporate career woman mid-week’ and an ‘enthusiastic pedal pusher at the weekend’. Recently she launched her shop – Velo Sister – with two goals: to provide women who ride with some awesome clothing, and to support the Racing Chance Foundation.
Founded by Heather Bamforth who recently won the Women’s Sport Trust “Ambassador of Women’s Sport” award, the Racing Chance Foundation provides women with a pathway from novice to elite level cycling.
As well as the Racing Chance Foundation – who will receive 50 per cent of the shop’s profits – Fox has also created other designs that raise money for a selection of other specific charities – such as Wheels for Wellbeing and Freedom from Tourture.
“I’m sure I’d still be breathing if I hadn’t discovered cycling, but I might still be struggling with depression, and my life would be a lot less fun than it is now”
Describing her own relationship with two wheels, Fox explains: “Cycling saved my life. Ok that’s not entirely true. I’m sure I’d still be breathing if I hadn’t discovered cycling, but I might still be struggling with depression, and my life would be a lot less fun than it is now. Cycling has brought me so much happiness, I want to share it with anyone who’ll listen.”
Fox bought her first road bike after signing up for a triathlon – and a few years later she now rides sportives, time trials, road races, cyclocross, and enjoys mountain biking and riding at the velodrome.
Outlining her journey to launching the shop, she says: “Cycling had become integral to my life. I spent a lot of time cycling, helping my club, helping at races and helping other women to get into cycling and racing. I’d met so many lovely people and made new friends. Cycling had brought me a huge amount of pleasure. But buying clothing that reflected that enthusiasm was hard work because there are limited designs available for women.”
Rather than accept this was the norm, Fox created the shop – and now you can buy hoody’s, t-shirts, and tote bags. All safe in the knowledge that your purchase will support a good cause.
