British Cycling Wants You to Help Run Cycling in the UK

Have your say and make a difference to women's cycling - British Cycling want more people to get involved in running the sport in the UK.

Passionate about cycling? Want to ensure the future is bright for young riders? Keen to encourage support for women’s cycling? Interested in seeing how cycling in the UK develops? Then this new from British Cycling is right up your street.

British Cycling, the national body that oversees cycling in the UK, have put out a call for more people to get involved in the governance and organisation of the sport.

Only 16% of the volunteer official roles are currently held by women, which reflects the pattern of membership of British Cycling, but that’s something we at Total Women’s Cycling would love to see increase, on both counts!

With the annual general meeting, known as the National Council, approaching on the 22nd November at Crewe Hall in Cheshire, it’s your chance to get involved in the strategic decisions on how the sport is run.

British Cycling’s president, Bob Howden, said:

“We want to encourage more people to get involved in running our sport at all levels. Of course, racing or cycling for leisure is great fun and very rewarding but we also want to inspire more people to think about the difference they can make by volunteering to help govern what we do.

“From joining the committee of a cycling club to sitting on a regional board, there are lots of opportunities to help shape the sport and we want to encourage people interested in cycling at all levels to get involved.”

There are many ways you can get involved, such as joining your local cycling club’s committee, getting nominated for your Regional Council, or becoming a National Councillor or Regional Board Member. Visit the British Cycling guide to getting involved in governance page for more information.

Women’s cycling is certainly flourishing, but there’s so much more to be done. More women in place in British Cycling will represent the growing numbers of women who are taking to two wheels, at all levels, and promote their needs, wants, and interests.
