First Impressions: Bluegrass Helmet and Impact Protection

Bluegrass are a company that take impact protection seriously. They produce a range of helmets, gloves, kneepads and protection vests that are worn by professional athletes and every day riders alike.

They also support grass roots initiatives, sponsor athletes and run events such as the Bluegrass Enduro Tour. The Enduro Tour consists of a range of different styles of events over the year and across Europe, including a mass-start race in Scotland and a women only round in Dublin.

Getting impact protection products for mountain biking that are female specific is virtually impossible. However, a lot of items here are ‘unisex’ so once you know what size you are you should be fine. We’re going to test these for performance and fit to see how they do.

With Bluegrass supporting riders like Olympic BMXer Shanaze Reade, pro-mountain biker Hannah Barnes and writer (and TWC) contributor Juliet Elliot, we can’t to see how these items perform! Here are our first impressions.

Bluegrass Brave Full Face Helmet

– We love the bright colours and simple graphics this helmet comes in! If you’re not a fan of yellow, you can also get it in black, red, pink, green and blue.

– Having had a quick try-on, it feels very tight going over the ears, but actually fitted fine when on. We’ll see how it does in action.

– It’s got vents to help with airflow and cooling, plus it’s designed to minimise how much sound gets blocked out when you wear it.

– The visor is designed to unclip on impact to prevent it knocking your head backwards. The helmet is also compatible with googles and neckbraces.

Bluegrass Bobcat Kneepads

-Designed to be used by downhill riders on the World Cup circuit, these will provide plenty of protection for you knees!

– Extra padding on the sides will give all-round protection from knocks and bangs.

– A neoprene fabric will keep the pad where it should be, with a mesh fabric behind the knee to help keep your legs cool.

– Silicone grippers on the pads should help them stay in place while you’re riding.

Bluegrass Impact vest

– A protection vest that provides protection for your spine. Certainly a good idea for riders who like downhill or enduro, want a bit more protection but don’t want an all-out pressure suit.

– The protector panel is made from a flexible D30 foam. It’s flexible while you ride, but hardens on impact to provide protection.

– This is a product that may or may not work for women – for obvious biological reasons. We’re interested to see how it does.
