Healthy flapjack recipe for cyclists: quick, vegan and luxury options
Banish shop bought energy gels and opt in for making your own at home. You know exactly what’s going into them, they’re healthier and treat your insides much better!
We’ve had a go at making our own gels and can’t wait for you all to try them, but first we had a stab at making strawberry-chia gelly cubes. They work just as well as natural energy gels and are easier to snack on whilst riding.
Ingredients:
- 550 grams of strawberries
- 1/2 a cup of water
- 2 tbsp of lemon juice
- 1 cup of sugar
- 10 grams of agar-agar Powder
- 2 1/2 ounces of chia seeds
- 1/2 a tsp baking soda
Method:
Mash up the strawberries in a mixing bowl and add in the renaming ingredients. Let the mixture sit for 20 minutes.
Pour the mixture into a saucepan and bring to the boil on a medium heat, making sure that the chia seeds don’t start to burn at the bottom of the pan. Keep stirring the mixture, at the same heat, for another 15 minutes.
Then transfer the mixture into a greased baking tray and put it aside to cool for three hours. This will help the mixture to settle and make sure that the water doesn’t seep out from the mixture.
Cut the gelly cube into smaller cubes, we decided on a diamond shape but unleash your creativity! Finish by rolling the cubes in sugar and popping them into the fridge or freezer to keep them cool until you want to use them.
