Fresh from winning the final race and overall title in the UCI World Cup series, Lizzie Armitstead has announced that she is engaged.

The Yorkshire cyclist told the world this morning: “Last night Philip Deignan asked me to be his wife, and I said YES!”

Deignan is also a professional cyclist for Team Sky. Armitstead said in an interview with VeloUK that their relationship has helped her along the way to success, though cycling was rarely their chosen topic of conversation – saying:

If you’re happy and settled, everything falls into place. Being with Philip (Deignan ) has helped and although we don’t talk cycling much, just being happy has had a positive impact on my cycling.
