What is chamois cream?

Let’s start at the beginning and take a look at what chamois cream is and what it does.

Chamois cream – which can also be a butter – helps reduce chaffing and irritation to those already sensitive bits as you cycle. When you combine a repetitive pedalling motion with pressure, it causes heat and can result in saddle sores and a painful raw skin feeling.

The cream is usually applied directly to the chamois pad, or to the skin, and acts as a lubricant to reduce the friction between you and your shorts. However, chamois cream isn’t for everyone and like with most things cycling related, it comes down to a personal preference. The subtle hints of menthol can be detected when in contact with the skin as it warms to create a soft tingling sensation. It really takes no time at all to cream your chamois pad and once you’re done, you’re good to ride.

I’ve used ASSOS’ Chamois Crème Woman pre-ride on the trails, on the road and on the track. It’s become a cycling essential for me and unless I’m popping to the shops, I’ll always use this – without knickers – within my chamois shorts. Since using this cream, I’ve found a significant reduction in chaffing, and for someone who often gets bikini waxes, I’ve noticed fewer ingrowing hairs – hurray!
