Review: Le Col Sport Ladies Winter Jacket

Rachel Sokal tests the Le Col Sport Ladies Winter Jacket, find out how she got on with it here...

Ask the Expert: Why do Men Overtake me Seconds After I Have Passed Them?

Le Col is a French-named, British company owned and run by the Welsh pro cyclist Yanto Barker.   The company produces a small range of high-quality kit which is manufactured in Traviso, Italy.

The Ladies Winter jacket is fantastically well-tailored.  When I first put it on it felt a bit on the small side particularly across the front of my shoulders and chest (and that’s despite my lack of cleavage). But once on the bike it felt great – the bias cut designed to suit the forward position of your arms on the bike without leaving excess fabric at the front.

The front of the Le Col Sport Ladies Winter Jacket is made from water-resistant Wind Stopper material which makes it incredibly warm.  The inside is a soft, slightly fleecy material that feels really snug.  The quality and performance of the Wind Stopper material is really noticeable and I am developing a perverse desire for the weather to turn really cold so I can fully reap its benefits.  There are wide, broad cuffs so it’s easy to ensure there are no gaps between your jacket and your gloves.  I am a UK size 8-10 and the small was well-fitting despite my initial reservations.

There are three well-proportioned pockets on the rear.  There’s a fourth zipped phone-sized pocket on the rear which has a water-proof lining and a small Napolean pocket perfect for your keys.

For me there are two downsides to the Le Col Sport Ladies Winter Jacket.  Firstly the one I tested was all black; it looks smart but in my opinion that’s not ideal for a winter road jacket.  There is a reflective strip down the back pocket but I prefer something a bit brighter.  However, it is also available in pink and black which certainly fits this bill.  The other downside for me is the price – it retails for £170 which is far more than I’d comfortably pay.  But if you have the finances to do so, you’ll certainly get a jacket of fantastic quality and performance.
