World’s First Solar Cycle Lane: Work Begins in Holland

Photo: Solaroad

Good news! Two of our favourite things (cycling and saving the earth) are being combined via the new solar bike lane being installed between two Amsterdam suburbs.

Krommenie and Wormerveer are currently connected by a popular cycle lane that around 2000 cyclists use every day. 70 metres of solar paving (costing €3m) is being installed as the first step in a project that the local authority hopes will see the path being extended to 100 metres by 2016. Its creators hope that it will produce enough energy to power three households.

We’d love to see this kind of initiative in the UK. We’re not sure if our weather would generate much energy though!
