Rachel Atherton wins overall UCI Mountain Bike World Cup by 9 seconds

Britain’s Rachel Atherton wins Mountain Bike World Cup downhill title in Windham, USA.

Round 6 of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano saw women’s World Cup leader Rachel Atherton (GT Factory) claim an overall lead making it her fourth World Cup title and a fifth successive race win.

It was a great day for the Brits with Manon Carpenter and Tahnee Seagrave finished second and third respectively. Speaking about competing in the event, Atherton said:

This is the most World Cups I’ve won in one year. I’ve won four before so five is pretty cool. I just try and take each day as it comes. The World Cup overall means a lot. You have to be so consistent all year.

Atherton was ahead of Carpenter by a margin of nearly 10 seconds on a course with dry, dusty conditions which reportedly made the rough, steep track even more difficult, with riders losing traction on the corners.

On racing at Windham, Atherton said:

I’m always stoked to race in Windham, I always do well here. I couldn’t believe how noisy it was on the way down. All the fans and the Americans were just wild… they love it. Pretty cool.

Rachel Atherton had already won the women’s overall title before the Final in the penultimate round after qualifying first but still tackled the race with determination.

This is a fantastic victory for both the British and women’s mountain bike scene and we are immensely proud of such a strong rider as Atherton representing Britain and the women’s mountain bike scene.
