7 of Best Knee Pads for Mountain Bikers

Knee bumps and scrapes are inevitable in MTB, so keep yours well protected

It’s going to happen in mountain biking, but falling off and making mistakes is all part of the fun. Getting muddy, slapped in the face with branches and kicking up those stones are the risks we take when we shred those gnarly trails.

It’s important to take care of your body though, and having effective protection is key for a safe and comfortable ride… and fall. There’s nothing worse than coming off the bike, cutting your leg, or worse – breaking it. An injury like this could put you out of action for weeks, even months.

So we’ve rounded up the best knee protection for all mountain trail riders…

POC VPD

Highly acclaimed and arguably the best brand for body armour is POC sports. From their extensive range of protection, we’ve chosen the VPD knee pads which are suitable for all mountain and downhill riding.

The slip-on design has silicone cuffs as well as a loop and lock Velcro system, so these bad boys aren’t going anywhere. Don’t be deceived by the soft feel and bendiness of the pad itself, because these POC VPD’s are hard-wearing, and they can take a good bashing on the trails.

IXS Flow

A popular choice for many mountain bikers, especially the women, are the lightweight and compact IXS Flow knee pads.

Similar to the POC VPD’s, the Flow pads are soft and bendy but they are able to withstand multiple impacts and a great deal of shock. These are a personal favourite owing to their slimmer profile and mesh fabric which allows for maximum breathability.

Silicone cuffs grip the leg securely, enhanced by the loop and lock Velcro strap across the bottom of the cuff.

They have a strong protective shell for high impacts, encased in durable Kevlar fabric and air meshing for that all important moister and odour control.
