How to: Choose the Perfect Saddle

Saddle sores no more! How to find the perfect saddle

Understanding your anatomy is an essential element to finding the perfect saddle. If like us, you were never a fan of biology then please do not be put off by the diagrams, we are going to make this as simple as possible!

Here are a few things you should know about the anatomy of your backside:

  1. Asses are like snowflakes – no two are the same.
  2. We all have a pelvis – this is a pretty important part of our make up as it allows us to sit down, stand up and most importantly ride our bikes.  It also aids good posture.
  3. You can sit at a desk all day without any pain, yet an hour in the saddle can leave your waddling around like Donald Duck for the rest of the day. This is because when we sit on a chair, our weight displacement is being helped by your ‘junk in the trunk’. It’s a cushy thing that’s keeping most of the pressure off your actual skeleton, or sit bones (known as ischial tuberosities). There is no involvement whatsoever on the part of your pelvis that you sit on when you ride a bike.
  4. The type if rider you are will determine how much pelvic rotation you experience when you are riding. More aggressive riding styles adopting a performance-orientated posture will result in pressure further up the pelvis in the pubic rami up into the pubic arch.
