Abus Padlocks is a German company that has been trading since 1924, based in a town called Wetter in the country’s North Rhine area. Another fun Abus fact is that the name is short for August Bremicker und Söhne KG. We’re going to stick with calling them Abus for now though. They are not specialists in bicycle locks and security, but are well known for their all-round reliability and quality. A extremely well-trusted brand, they provide locks and security for business and government organisations across Germany and beyond.
Despite not being specialists, their bike lock department is extremely comprehensive. They offer cable locks, coil cable locks and U-locks as you would expect. They also produce a number of different folding locks. These locks, called ‘Bordo’, are currently a design unique to Abus and fulfil a function similar to the U-lock, but are much more lightweight and easier to carry. Abus also do a good range of small, portable frame locks to help increase your security. Their steel-o-flex locks are basically very flexible cable locks encased in toughened steel. Secure, but perhaps a little on the heavy side. Their special locks are also worth checking out, as they feature a number of different types of multi-loop lock that are useful for securing accessories and kit.
Essentially, if you need to lock your bike to something securely, Abus is the place to go. They’ll even provide the ‘something’, with a couple of heavy-duty wall and floor mounts in their range.
