Taking the Cube Axial WLS GTC SL out of the box for the first time was a pivotal moment in my cycling career. It was love at first sight. Here was a women’s specific bike far removed from the ‘girly’ colourways we have become accustomed to seeing. Instead a badass matt red racing machine sat before my very eyes. I could not wait to ride it.
How to: Get the best road bike for your budget
Setting impossibly high expectations for this bike based on its looks and initial run down of its credentials, I was really relieved that it was not an ‘all style and no substance situation’. This bike is beautiful to ride.
Weighing in a 7.8kgs, this bike offers sublime strength to weight ratio. The oversized tubes on the main triangle, extra-large head tube and bottom bracket junctions and bottom bracket have resulted in outstanding stiffness and precise steering. If you are upgrading to this bike from an entry or mid level road bike you will notice a big difference in responsiveness. But for those looking for peace of mind in a bike will be relieved to find that while it is responsive it is actually very predictable and held its line really well on descents.
10 Things all Female Cyclists are Guilty of Saying
It is also exceptionally comfortable to ride. This is in part thanks to thin seat stays and the Selle Italia X1 WLS saddle that comes as standard which took the edge of bumpier roads. Although I do take on board that saddles are a very personal thing so may not share my view here!
In terms of components, the Cube WLS GTC SL comes with the complete 2×11 Ultegra groupset, the 11-32 cassette and compact cranks which make this a pretty versatile steed, suitable for both longer training rides, challenging climbs in the Alps and racing closer to home, although the Fulcrum Racing 55 LG wheels are kind of begging to be raced! All in all this is the perfect choice for ladies looking to up their speed.
Verdict:
This is a great bike for women who want a women’s specific racing machine without the traditional ‘girly’ colour palette. The bike is super comfortable, responsive and holds its line well on steep descents. It is a nippy climber and is guaranteed to improve those sprint times!
