Thankfully Sportful is here to see you through winter with their new Luna collection

I think the feeling is unanimous that winter has well and truly kicked in.

As much as we might try to hold on to those blissful memories of summer cycling, eventually we have to give in to the cold days and reach for the thermals. That’s where Sportful come in; both the Luna tights and jacket saw me through the night shift on a 24hr time-trial in the depths of October, so I am ever confident this is the kit of choice when it comes to the chilly days ahead.

Sportful’s Luna Softshell Jacket

Sportful’s Luna jacket isn’t packable but is the perfect option for those cold days in the saddle where you know you will need a jacket for the duration.

A softshell front of the jacket and sleeve inserts work right the way through to the shoulder area to better protect you, whilst the back and underside of the sleeve are panelled using the lighter thermodrytex plus material to hold the warmth and maximising breathability. The heavier material on the front is further complemented by a wind-blocking material layer behind the zip and a high collar which is super snug and makes all the difference when it comes to keeping that extra heat in.

The elasticated hem keeps the jacket in place without being too tight. The sleeves are also elasticated at the cuffs to hold them in place but given that the elastic here is much looser you may want to pop a long sleeve base-layer on to stop any cold draughts, especially if you have skinny wrists as I do.

The Luna jacket is a comfortable fit giving a little extra room for any additional layers you might want to add. There are three rear pockets providing ample space with the depth of the pockets allowing you to tuck any valuables right in.

The overall design is classic and elegant. The jacket is highlighted with coral to make you more visible to other road users but not in such a manner that it looks garish or out of place. The embroidered Sportful logo on the rear of the jacket is a subtle nod to the brand and matches the logo on the leg of the Luna bib-tights.

Sportful Luna Bib-Tights

The moment you put on Sportful’s Luna bib-tights the brushed fleece inner feels cosy and warm against your skin, preparing you for the harsh winter chill. The thermodrytex material adds to the warmth and elasticity to hug your legs as you draw them up making them perfect for temperatures ranging between 5-15*C.

The low cut front is very comfortable and unlike other bib-tights, I have tried, the Luna bib-tights sit perfectly on your front to avoid cutting into your stomach or sitting too low. The cut also provides improved temperature regulation as you can opt for a lighter weight or thicker base-layer to keep your front warm.

The princess chamois is very comfortable without being too bulky. Suitable for shorter commutes or long days in the saddle, I wore these bib-tights without the help of chamois cream from the get-go and with no complaints. Equally the Luna bib-tights are easy to wash at regular temperatures so there is no problem removing any excess cream should you decide to use some.

The silicone grippers at the bottom of the leg replace the camlock ankle zip used on the Fiandre No Rain bib-tights. The silicone grippers are perfect for locking in the heat and personally I find them more comfortable in comparison to the zip option.

Sportful Fiandre WS Booties

The next generation Gore Windstopper material of the Fiandre WS Booties is strategically sealed to better protect your feet from the wind and wet. Having had some problems previously with various overshoes coming undone during the ride I was particularly conscious of the camlock zip at the rear of the boot but comfortable and secure I didn’t come across any problems throughout the testing period.

The elegant simplicity of the design provides some reflectivity to the overshoes and adds an element of style to the overall look when matched with the Luna bib-tights and the softshell jacket. On a similar note, the reflective loop at the back of the bootie helps you to put the bootie on and/or remove it. I have comfortably used the same booties with my road shoes at the weekend and my spd’s when commuting; the stretch construction better adapts the bootie to different shoes.

It is designed to protect from the wet from both above the abrasion resistant bottom also helps avoid too much wear and tear which is always helpful when making any café stops or collecting the bike from the garage and such.

Verdict

Whatever the weather, Sportful never seem to let you down.

The Luna bib-tights and jacket are the perfect matching pair. Functional, elegant, and great value for money; they are a true asset to anyone’s winter cycling selection. Having worn the kit through a cold October night I am more than confident in the warmth the kit provides and complimented by many whilst wearing the kit, I am just as confident in the style.
