The British climate is notoriously unpredictable, but layers can be bulky and heavy to carry when you cycle.

Enter the P.R.O. Barrier Lite Jacket from Pearl Izumi, a featherweight jacket that packs down small enough to fit in your jersey pocket.

It is clear that this jacket has been cut with the athletically built cyclist in mind. Although the jacket wasn’t uncomfortable to cycle in, the fit was noticeable, tugging and stretching across my chest. The good news is that even though it was a snug fit, none of my movements were restricted.

Pearl Izumi’s Barrier Lite system offers wind- and water-resistant protection against the elements. This jacket wouldn’t do much to help you in a torrential downpour, but I’ve tried it in light rain showers and emerged dry and warm at the other end.

The windproof qualities are very noticeable too, with elasticated hem and cuffs keeping you sealed up, this jacket is a great shell to keep the chill off when you start descending after an epic climb or when you get caught out in a summer shower.

It’s incredibly light and packs down to a tiny size. The little integral pocket serves well to keep it contained, so it’s easy to pop in a pocket ‘just in case’ when you head out for a ride, even if the sun is shining.
