Clovelly in Devon is home to a beautiful and brutal ascent. It’s normally accessed via a completely cobbled hill closed to traffic, but there is also a service road that presents less of a death-trap but still a considerable challenge for cyclists.

Like most UK hills, this climb is short and sweet at only 470m. But a maximum gradient of 30 per cent will ensure that your lungs experience an alps-worthy level of inflation even over the short distance.
