Total Women’s Cycling teams up with Yorkshire Bicycle Show

With the greatest road race in the world – the Tour de France – departing from our fair shores in 2014, get yourself in the spirit by heading to the Yorkshire Bicycle Show 2014, taking place this weekend in Leeds.

There’s something for everyone at the Yorkshire Bicycle Show, with organisers taking the opportunity to celebrate the rich tapestry of cycling the region has to offer. Total Women’s Cycling and our brother site, Road Cycling UK have a stand and we’ll be giving goody bags away. On Sunday there’s also a host of women’s talks taking place so if you’re at a loose end this weekend, head to Leeds Town Hall and drop by to say hello.

What’s on at Yorkshire Bicycle Show

There’ll be film screenings, demonstrations, talks and displays, not to mention a good line in local beers, ales and food. Exhibitors include bike companies, frame builders and cycle retailers, so expect to see Tokyo Fixed, Feather Cycles, Milk Bikes as well as Sustrans, CTC and the Leeds Cycling Campaign.

Makers of beautiful and unusual waterproof cycle wear for women Georgia in Dublin will be there, as will Coven, a women’s magazine with a difference covering ‘action, art and adventure’.

On Sunday, there are 3 female specific talks, from Emily Chappell, a rider we featured on the site before for her wonderful blog documenting her cycle round the world to ‘Women in Cycling’ featuring a host of fantastic women in the industry discussing how to get more women on bikes. Details of the talks are noted below;

1. Emily Chappell

Keen blogger and the voice behind “That Messenger Chick”, this determined rider has countless stories to tell. Ex London cycle courier Emily takes us on a tour of her epic round the world trip.
Attend the talk on Sunday 12:00PM at the Yorkshire Bicycle Show!

2. Women in Cycling: Juliet Elliot, Jenni Gwiazdowski, Emily Chappell, Elena Corchero, Alice Marsh, Denise Burton (TBC)

It’s a great time to be a woman in cycling with more women than ever getting on bikes. But there is still a way to go. Is it just a case of getting more women more confident on the roads and with more maintenance skills or do we need the women’s Tour to lead the way? With the huge changes in the culture of cycling where does the industry stand? We will be chatting about the realities of riding professionally, the daily commute, advertising, sponsorship and sisterhood.
Attend the talk on Sunday 1:00pm at the Yorkshire Bicycle Show!

3. Justine Potter and Charlie Burton

Maxine Peake’s radio play Love on Two Wheels documented the story and achievements of Beryl Burton’s career. Justine Potter (producer of the play) and Beryl’s husband Charlie talk about researching and writing the story. Beryl’s record-breaking a result of talent, unyielding determination to succeed coupled with devoted support from her husband. Delve into the life of one of Britain’s most decorated athletes.
