A video has emerged which shows a driver honking their horn before colliding with a cyclist and driving away at a Critical Mass ride in late November.
The clip, posted by TJStamp, shows the incident that took place at around 9pm in London during the organised ride designed to raise awareness of cycling and safety.
The driver of the Peugeot 307 arrives at the junction at about the 1.20 mark, before honking their horn and then careering into a cyclist.
“The driver floors the accelerator and steers the car directly at the rider who is first pushed to the ground after being struck by the driver-side wing, then the driver steers his car directly over the bike rider and his bicycle”
TJStamp, who uploaded the video, gives us more detail on what he says happened – explaining: “His vehicle makes contact with one of the riders, the cyclist reacts to being hit by first tapping on the window, the driver ignores the rider’s protest and keeps pushing in to him. At this point the rider, clearly unhappy with being driven at hits the driver-side wing mirror. Completely incensed at this act the driver floors the accelerator and steers the car directly at the rider who is first pushed to the ground after being struck by the driver-side wing, then the driver steers his car directly over the bike rider and his bicycle with both driver’s side wheels running directly over the bicycle and the rider’s legs.
“Once clear of the injured cyclist and mangled bicycle the driver puts his car into reverse and starts to edge backwards. At this point many nearby witnesses rush towards the car and the driver stops reversing, then makes his escape driving north up Curtain Road clipping a White Van with his wingmirror in the process. All the way through the incident the young male driver was furiously shouting abuse through his open window, while his passenger laughed.”
Police and paramedics arrived at the scene, but the rider suffered only minor injuries, though his bike is said to have been destroyed.
The London Standard have reported a Metropolitan Police comment, in which a spokesperson says: “Officers are investigating a fail to stop collision. The offence happened on Friday, 27 November at 8.20pm at Scrutton Street, EC2. A cyclist was in collision with a car. The cyclist suffered minor injuries. The driver of the car failed to stop. Enquires are in hand to trace the driver of the car.”
