Week one of the 96th Giro d’Italia has seen it’s fair share of attacks, epic descents, crashes, and overall sensational riding.
Why then, did our hero, Sir Bradley Wiggins, the ambassador of all things two-wheeled, reigning Tour de France champion have to go and stick his foot in it with a rather sexist remark?
As the peloton heads into the mountain stages, Sir Wiggo sits 76 seconds off the lead. Granted, he’s had his fair share of difficulties but did he really need to comment that cycling like a girl is the reason why he’s not smashing it in the Giro?
On Friday he slipped and fell on a hairpin during a downpour, riding slowly for the remaining 7km of the stage and losing time.
A possible slip of the tongue he said,
Let’s be honest, I descended like bit of a girl really after the crash.
Here at Total Women’s Cycling, we love Wiggins, his dry wit, cycling prowess and fashion choices, but for someone in his position to make a derogatory comment like this, towards women, is hard to ignore.
Digging himself deeper, trying to cover his tracks, he commented,
Not to disrespect girls, I have one at home. But that’s life and we have to push on and deal with the disappointments.
Some people may say we’re making a mountain out of a molehill, but for Britain’s man of the hour in cycling to make such a sexist comment to the world’s media does nothing for women in sport.
