Reigning World and Olympic Champion Marianne Vos to Race at The Women’s Tour

Dutch cycling enigma Marianne Vos will compete in this years inaugural Women's Tour, organisers SweetSpot confirmed yesterday.

The 26-year-old reigning world and Olympic road race champion is currently the first high-profile cyclist to confirm their entrance to the prestigious 2.1 UCI ranked event.

Vos will head up the Rabo Live team in the first UCI ranked stage race for women to be held in Britain, which will take place over five stages in May.

This will be the first time back on British roads for Vos since that rainy afternoon in July 2012, when she outsprinted Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead to win gold an the London Olympics.

“It’s great that we get a big new stage race on our calendar. I’m sure it will be a fantastic event,” Vos said.

“The times that I’ve raced in Great Britain – with, of course, the London Olympic Games fresh in my mind – I have been amazed by the huge crowds and the enthusiastic people.

“I’m sure it will be a fantastic event and I’m looking forward to competing here with the best riders from all over the World.”

Taking place from 7 to 11 May, the women’s peloton will begin in Northamptonshire with an opening stage from Oundle to Northampton.

Other counties to welcome the cyclists include Leicestershire, Bedfordshire, Essex and Hertfordshire, before the final stage finish in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on 11 May.
