Our love for Katie Archibald only grew stronger as we watched her break away from the front of the peloton during Tuesday’s Matrix Fitness GP Series in Motherwell.
The track specialist made her move with around 15 minutes remaining of the city centre criterium in Scotland, Katie’s home nation.
Second and third place riders, Nikki Juniper (Team Giordana Triton) and Eileen Roe (Wiggle Honda) jumped to catch her attack, but too late.
This left Katie to time trial away for the remainder of the race, finishing just ahead of some of the backmarkers.
After a brief celebration, Katie calmly dismounted and took to the stands to see the bunch compete in a sprint finish, which Juniper managed to claim with a dominating burst of speed.
This will be the last of the Matrix Fitness GP series races Archibald will be able to race, as she’ll be spending more time on the track in preparation for Rio in 2016.
Understandably, in her solo breakaway, Katie also won the ‘Combativity Award’ and sprints points, and her team Pearl Izumi Sports Tours International led the team standings.
After two rounds, Team Giordana Triton still lead the overall team standings, by six points to Pearl Izumi, and Giordana rider Nikki Juniper is on top of the individual standings with Archibald one point behind.
The next round is in Croydon, on Tuesday June 2, and there will be five in total. Check out this report from round one if you’re feeling behind on the action!
