If you haven’t already, check out the SCOTT AMT Short Sleeve Jersey review here.
The SCOTT AMT Loose Fit MTB shorts are light, bright and ideal for wearing for mountain biking on hot summer days. And if it does get a little rainy, they dry super-quick. Water and wind resistant fabric combined with lightweight fabric and ventilation makes these a well thought out pair of shorts.
At first sight I thought these shorts might come up a little small, but in practice the fit was perfect, if a bit short in the leg for my liking. I opted for a size large, which was spot on for my curvy size 12 lower half. There was room for a pair of chamois liner shorts underneath, but the fabric has no stretch in it, so if in doubt go up a size.
The waistband fit can be adjusted using Velcro pull-tabs, and the shorts fasten with a zip fly and a second Velcro tab. The zip was effective in keeping the shorts fastened, but no thanks to the Velcro pull-tab, which basically didn’t work, looked a bit cheap and let the shorts down a little as it kept coming undone.
The fabric is extremely lightweight, and feels light as a feather on. There are also laser cut ventilation holes along the thighs, which in combination with the fabric make these shorts great for hot weather riding. I was glad of them on a long ride on an unseasonably hot day recently!
One downside to this is that they do show a darker patch if they get damp or wet, but they also dry very rapidly and don’t leave a mark afterwards, due to the DRYOxell fabric. There are no pockets on the shorts, worth knowing if that’s an essential feature for you. They are also slightly water resistant too, and in a light shower rain did bead on the surface. However, they won’t cope with a downpour.
I found these shorts were more towards the loose rather than baggy end of the MTB shorts scale. The cut is fitted but comfortable, and there was plenty of room for movement. They are also quite short, at least for my preferences. I tend to like shorts that hang down to around my knees, and don’t leave a gap between my kneepads and the bottom of the shorts. These came to my lower mid-thigh (I’m 5’9) so there was a gap.
Personally, I’ll be wearing these for summer blasts around my local trails, but without pockets and being a little short; I’d avoid them for long all-mountain rides.
VERDICT
Great for cross-country mountain biking or trail riding in hot weather, these are so light and ventilated you’ll hardly notice you’re wearing them. If you like a fitted look, but don’t fancy Lycra for the summer, these are worth a look.
