Mums’ Corner: Frog Bikes Frog 62 kids’ bike review

A kids bike which they will want to ride and you will want to buy? Does the Frog 62 meet the expectations of both mum and sprog?

Keeping things simple, not adding extras and ensuring the weight is minimal means kids love riding Frog Bikes

Frog bikes cater for approximately 2-14 year olds (34cm to 73cm inside legs) with a 9-model range, starting with a balance bike aptly named ‘Tadpole’ right up to the Frog 74 for 12-14 year olds.

Our tester chose the Frog 62 model, in purple, which suited her tall 8-year-old daughter.

9.7kg may seem a lot of weight compared to adult bikes, but the Frog weighs in at much less than many other kids’ offerings.

The Frog 62 model in purple

As many parents will know, colour is very important to children and the bikes across the entire range come in variety: purple, red and orange, with a polka dot option for the younger children and black for the older ones.

Our tester learnt to ride independently using this bike and found that it was easy to steer with brake levers accessible within the span of her hands.

The build-quality gave mum (me) reassurance that she wouldn’t have many problems when out on the road and even cycling up to 10 miles in a go no discomfort or issues were found. The saddle was comfy and has a quick release lever and a cool frog logo.

The available colour options for Frog 62

The Frog 62 comes with 7 speed easy twist gears which our tester quickly got used to and which enabled her to get away quickly at junctions where needed and to manage small hills with ease.

The removable mudguards seemed a bit flimsy – permanent ones would seem a more sensible option, especially given how often children find unexpected puddles to ride through. Quick release wheels mean that the bike is easy to stow inside a car for day trips and holidays.

Frog have thought about the whole concept of buying a child’s bike and offer something very different to what you would get at a high street bike store. For a start, families can set up a ‘gift list’ option like a wedding list, so that friends and family can contribute to buying a bike for a child’s birthday or Christmas present.

An added unexpected benefit, given that children’s bikes are – by virtue of their users – not going to be a long term investment, the part exchange scheme is an excellent idea for those who are not going to pass their bikes down to younger children. The bikes seem to hold their value well on ebay too, if you want to sell the bike when it is outgrown.

Verdict

On first look Frog Bikes may seem expensive, but as an impeccably specced, well thought through offering for children, you’d be hard pressed to find a better kids bike.

Great specs, amazing sizing range, incredible resale value, colourways that children want – what’s not to love?

Pros

– Easy to adjust the saddle height
– Good resell value/options
– High quality brakes and gears make for a smooth safe ride

Cons

– Our tester found the reach a little too far for her arms, despite the bike fitting well everywhere else
