Blog of the week: Juliana Buhring

Juliana Buhring has packed more in to her 32 years than most of us could fit in a lifetime.

Wanderlust. Juliana’s blog documenting her traumatic childhood and round world cycle, with Pegasus, her trusty stead.

Raised in the Children of God sex cult, Juliana managed to escape to become the first women to circumnavigate the world by bicycle. She rode 18,000 miles in 152 days, which is way more than enough to earn her Blog of the Week.

I don’t know about you, but I’m always intrigued to find out just what pushes someone to cycle 18,000 miles round the world, alone. Luckily for us, Juliana’s ramblings as she calls them, offer a unique insight into her less than ordinary childhood. It sounds like a movie script. Trapped in a cult, Juliana escapes to set up Safe Passage, a not-for-profit organisation supporting others to break free from cults.

Reading her blog, you really get a sense of the suffering Juliana experienced. The fact that she set herself the challenge of cycling the world so she could be seen as something other than a cult survivor speaks volumes about her character.

It’s a story that is fit for a blockbuster, so we don’t want to give too much away. Take some time to explore her story; it will leave you aghast at what people are possible of.
In a world awash with doom and gloom, it is refreshing to see someone like Juliana, born in such appalling circumstances, complete such a monumental achievement.

An active participant in social media, Juliana is on both Facebook and Twitter.
