Review: Funkier WJ-1403 Storm Ladies Waterproof Jacket

Debbie Read heads to the hills to test the Funkier WJ-1403.

The Funkier waterproof (catchily named the WJ-1403!) jacket is a nicely cut and thoughtfully designed with a number of technical features.

I immediately liked the look of the Funkier WJ-1403 jacket, as it is designed for the female figure with a drop tail and shaped waist. The jacket has plenty of features including a vent on the back, a mesh lined colour and yoke, a large mesh rear pocket and chest ventilation zips.

The zips are waterproof, with nice large toggles to ensure you can always operate them even in thicker winter cycling gloves. The pockets all have storm flaps covering them to protect your treasures.

In terms of fit I found the Funkier WJ-1403 jacket to be a little snug. The medium sizing should fit me ok based upon their size guide (& me being a pretty standard size 12), but I have struggled to wear adequate layers underneath it that I normally would at this time of the year, so would ideally choose to go up a size.

The material has a slightly rubbery feel on the inside, which feels a little clammy and is difficult to get on and off over other layers. I have yet to take the jacket off without pulling the sleeves inside out!

For a dark coloured jacket (other colours are available) I liked the reflective taping which was well integrated into the design and was highly effective.

So, how does it perform? I actually found this too hot to wear for longer than very short periods of time. I have carried it with me on many rides to date and cannot face wearing it in anything other than pouring rain, and when stationary. It is highly waterproof, but the chest ventilation zips do not allow enough airflow, and there is almost no breathability.

Sadly this means that besides looking great, and being perfect to put on when packing bikes and cars, or at a cafe stop it’s too hot to wear while cycling. A real shame for such a nicely styled female jacket.

Verdict

The Funkier WJ-1403 jacket is thoughtfully designed and nicely cut for the female figure and 100% waterproof, but the lack of breathability makes it almost impossible to wear whilst riding at any pace.

Pros

– Good technical features.

– 100% waterproof.

Con

– Lack of breathability.
