Brompton Handlebars: The Complete Guide

We sort the H from the S types and bring you the complete guide to the different types of Brompton handlebars

So you’ve finally chosen your frame type and almost more importantly the colour combination of your brand spanking new Brompton bicycle. But one, very important decision remains – which handlebars  should you get?

There are four types of Brompton Handlebars to choose from – the S, M, P and H. You will see these letters reflected in the main featured Brompton bicycles. The handlebars can be changed as you wish with the use of the Brompton Bike Builder.

Brompton S-Type Handlebars

The S type grips are lower and further forward than on the M, P and H Types, giving a sporty riding position which complements the positive feel of these bikes.

The S Type handlebars are the lightest out of the four options and favoured by those who are used to riding a road bike and are searching for less wind resistance. It is worth noting though, that the only front bag suitable for this handlebar is the S-Bag so take this into consideration when making your choice.

Brompton M-Type Handlebars

The Brompton M Type is the most popular in the range. This riser bar will provide a more leisurely upright ride than the S type while offering really good control of the bike.

The M Type is perfect for anyone over 5 feet tall and who like to ride in am upright position which is useful if you are planning on riding on busy city streets at it improves your field of vision hugely.

Brompton P Type Handlebars

The P Type handlebars are a little bit of a hybrid between the S type and the M type. Designed with the tourer in mind, it offers two riding positions, one for hills and city riding and the lower one for fighting head winds!

Due to the combination of riding positions available, the P-type handlebar is designed to reduce fatigue in the wrists and arms thus making it suitable for longer rides.

Brompton H-Type Handlebars

Developed in response to requests from taller riders and from those wanting a markedly more upright riding position, the H grips are 60mm higher than the classic M type while forward reach to the grips from the saddle increases by around 13mm while it weighs about 100g more. Despite these alterations the H type still fits into all existing transportation bags and covers.

The H Type is perfect for those who like to travel at a leisurely pace, taking in the journey along the way.
