The MagicShine MJ-858 bicycle light is a great option for those looking for a commuter light with some serious oomph that won’t break the bank.
Opening the box initially I was a little wary – inside sat the light head, two rubber O-rings, a charger and battery pack. But once I took them out I was thankful to find that set up couldn’t have been easier.
The small yet mighty 1000 lumen light attaches to your handlebars with the handy rubber O-ring. An ample sized button sits on the back of the light that controls the three settings – full, dimmed and blinkered. And I am happy to report that the button is easily managed in winter gloves.
The light then attaches to a 4.4AH four cell battery pack which can be fixed on the crossbar, downtube, top tube or seat tube – really wherever you see fit. The battery pack is attached using two flexible rubber straps.
If you are someone who locks their bike outside and constantly needs to pop lights on and off your bike then this light might not be your ideal option. But for those who have an indoor lock up and ride through dimly lit streets to work it is perfect.
At full whack the light lasted just over three hours but at the lower setting I was happy to find it lasted just over 10 hours. So no need to charge the light every day which is good for someone who tends to be on the go from day to day. My only gripe with the battery is the fact that it needs to be connect to a wall outlet, I do find USB charging lights preferable for day to day commuting.
All in all, this light performed brilliantly all round and was pretty impressive given the £60 price tag. It is far better than other lights in this category with far greater price tags. The 12 month warranty is a further bonus!
