Could You be a Breeze Ride Leader?

British Cycling are looking for more leaders, and have explained their payment structure to us

Breeze is British Cycling’s dedicated programme designed to help get more women riding bikes. Breeze rides take place all over the country, with volunteer leaders called Breeze Champions hosting rides in their local areas and making them available to anyone who wants to take part.

With interested rapidly growing and more women looking for a ride partner or group, Breeze are seeking more women to volunteer to be trained up as champions.

The only requirements are that you be confident on a bike and keen to help others grow in their own abilities. To become a Breeze Champion, women will take part in a one day ride leadership course (dates and sign up procedure here), which will provide them with a certificate qualification allowing them to plan, deliver and promote rides to groups of women.

Becki Morris, Women’s Network Project Manager at British Cycling, said: “Our amazing volunteer champions are at the heart of our programme. Their passion and commitment to encourage and support women to get into cycling is admirable. It is in large part down to their efforts that the programme is as successful as it is, we never cease to be inspired by them.”

Leaders are expected to deliver 12 rides a year on average to local women, and in return will receive Breeze kit, British Cycling Ride membership, and support if you choose to go on to gain a first aid qualification. You can find out more about signing up here, and BC have produced a great video to show what an experience it can be…

Payment Structure for British Cycling Leaders

There have been some rumblings in the past over the lack of payment for Breeze leaders, when other ride leaders within British Cycling’s support structure are paid. We questioned this, and received a detailed outline of what’s expected of leaders under each network, and their financial structure. We think it sounds pretty fair, but we like to make sure everyone knows what they’re getting involved in at each level…

Breeze Network

The Breeze network was set up just over 5 years ago with Sport England National Lottery funding. The voluntary approach of the programme was essential to ensure that the network became sustainable beyond the life of the National Lottery funding. Breeze champions run small group rides in their local area at a time that suits them and their availability.

Ride Social

Ride Social was established three years ago. It’s a social cycling network where rides are set up by volunteers at a level and time which suits them. Many Ride Leaders are also involved in a voluntary capacity through Ride Social which is similar model to Breeze, again set up with sustainability in mind.

Sky Ride Local

The Sky Ride Local programme has been running for over 7 years, funded via investment from Sky, Sport England and Local Authorities. The delivery of these rides forms part of a contractual obligation with the Local Authorities. British Cylcing therefore need to ensure they deliver a consistent high standard of ride.

The Ride Leaders are employed by BC to deliver a set number of larger rides on a date, time and location set by British Cycling. Many of the Ride Leaders have to travel outside of their local area to deliver these rides hence the standard payment they receive is to cover the greater amount of time spent within this coordinated led ride programme where the time and location is set by British Cycling.
