On Test: MET Rivale Helmet

We review the lightweight road cycling helmet from MET

MET Helmets have been in the protection industry for many years, accruing a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Arguably the most important cycling companion is a suitable helmet. Thankfully, brands are pushing technology and concepts to deliver lightweight and stylish protection.

MET Helmets have been one of these brands to really push their research and development in these areas and strive to manufacture the best possible range of cycling helmets, across all disciplines.

We got our hands on their 2016 Rivale road helmet and have been cycling the country lanes and roads of South Wales.

First Impressions

I’m usually a mountain biker, so I’m used to a lot of head coverage with my trail lids and full face helmets. So when the Rivale arrived on my door step ready for road adventures, and without even opening the box, I thought “this is very light for a helmet”.

Having ripped open the packaging like a child at Christmas, the shiny cyan and white Rivale sat neatly in its box, waiting to be taken out for an adventure.

The construction of the Rivale is solid, despite the lightweight feel. Weighing just over 200g, the Rivale is built after extensive research and testing in the wind tunnel to refine and perfect aerodynamic efficiency.

On Test

Being fairly new to the road cycling scene, it felt a little strange switching to skinny wheels, Lycra bib shorts and smaller slimmer helmets.

I’ve covered a number of miles on my road bike whilst wearing the MET Rivale, on both chilly February rides, and super sunny Spring May rides.

The MET Rivale is very comfortable, and easy to adjust to find the perfect fit. The ratchet wheel at the rear is easy to rotate and it alters the size in small increments.

The Airlite straps are easy to clip and adjust, even with gloves on. They are lightweight, but feel strong and durable.

The soft padding lining the helmet was comfortable throughout the ride, and at no point did I suffer with any pinching, rubbing or irritation. The Coolmax internal padding carefully lines the cradle of the helmet and helps with sweat absorption on those power rides.

Verdict

The MET Rivale is incredibly comfortable with its deep helmet cradle, strategic padding and comfortable straps.

The lightweight construction and aerodynamic shape felt as though I didn’t have anything on at all. Once fitted and strapped up, I barely notice the Rivale whilst riding.

For a mountain biker, used to heavier and larger covering helmets, I’m surprised how comfortable and minimal the Rivale is.

Venturing from a mountain biking background into the world of skinny wheels and smooth tarmac is really exciting for me. I’m enjoying the comparisons between the two disciplines, and with such stark differences in kit, I’m excited to clock up more road miles over the summer.
