Honda’s Ultimate Cyclist Friendly Car

Honda Civic Tourer Active Life Concept aims to target cyclists

How many times have we explained to an irrational driver that we actually do own a car, too? Thankfully, Honda don’t need to be told – as their concept version of the existing Civic Tourer demonstrates.

They unleashed this concept car at a recent motor show in Frankfurt – adding cycling specific nods to their already spacious estate.

The car includes a bike loading rack, which can carry two upright bikes inside, with the front wheels removed. The racks then extend – to allow the bike to protrude from the car, much like a workstand, for easy pre-event maintenance. There’s even an extending shade and integrated light to help brighten up the day when you find yourself executing last minute repairs and gear indexing.

In a nod to efficiency, there is an aerodynamic roof box, and an integrated tool box and holder for the removed front wheel.

To ensure the petrol heads are happy (is that even what we call them?) Honda have mimicked the front end of the Honda Civic Type R, with additional 18-inch alloy wheels and a custom rear bumper.

The engine is the same as the  1.6 i-DTEC of a regular Civic (alas, our editor’s favourite car before catastrophic engine fail ended a beautiful relationship).

Honda aren’t the first to target cyclists – more recently Vauxhall released their ‘Mokka’ – a car they marketed specifically as MAMIL friendly, due to its integrated bike rack. We await the MAWIL campaign.

What do you think – is it a good sign that the car industry is waking up to the fact that many road users get around by car AND bike?
