Dani King Chooses the Road and Extends Wiggle Honda Contract

Team Manager Rochelle Gilmore says it's been hard not to pressure King to make the move earlier

Dani King has chosen to sign with Wiggle Honda for 2016, setting her sights on the Road Race team for the Olympics.

King, who won Gold in the Velodrome at London 2012, will not be competing on the track in the 2016 games. She has signed with Wiggle Honda, who will support her dreams to ride for World Champion Lizzie Armitstead in the Road Race.

The 24-year-old has come out on top after a tough year, which saw her missing out on track time after her accident in November 2014.

She arrived on the road circuit in fine form, with a win at the Tour of Reservoir in April this year – going on to take her first UCI top ten result and providing support for her team mates throughout the season.

Wiggle Honda have cited her support for Julien D’Hoore at the Women’s Tour and Open de Suède Vårgårda, plus work Elisa Longo Borghini at the Boels Rentals Ladies Tour as key examples of King’s strength on the road.

King hopes to further her road career with a renewed focus, and has said that the new Women’s World Tour format makes this even more exciting, explaining: “2016 will see me solely focus on the road for the first time in my career and with the Women’s World Tour starting next year this is an incredibly exciting time to be embarking on my career as a full time road cyclist.

“Wiggle Honda provides the perfect environment for me to embark on this new challenge and I can’t wait to see what 2016 brings me and the team.”

Team manager Rochelle Gilmore is thrilled with the extension of the contract, and with King’s decision to focus solely on the road – she said: “Wiggle Honda will be so much stronger in 2016 simply due to having Dani commit 100% to the road and our team.

“Personally it has been difficult for me to not actively pressure Dani to turn her focus and attention to the road earlier. However, the time has come, her heart has made the decision very clear for her towards the end of this season.

“I’m super excited to see what Dani will achieve on the road in 2016 and we as a team will also support Dani’s personal ambitions to be in Rio, assisting Britain’s Gold medal hope Lizzie Armitstead to victory.”

The new contract with Wiggle Honda covers one year, as opposed to the two year contracts that team mates Julien D’Hoore, Lucy Garner, Elisa Longo Borghini and Emma Johannsson have signed. Wiggle Honda have said that King will remain with the team for “at least one more season”, suggesting the option of continuing after 2016.  The other exception to the two year signing is Giorgio Bronzini, who plans to retire after 2016.
