No your eyes are not deceiving you. It has been confirmed that a six month experiment is underway in France which will pay people to cycle to work. The initiative is part of an effort by a number of European governments to try and boost people’s health, reduce air pollution and cut fossil fuel consumption.
Other countries have offered cycle to work schemes with varying financial incentives which include tax breaks, payments per kilometre and financial support for buying bicycles.
France is the latest country to hop on board – 20 companies and institutions employing a total of 10,000 people have signed up to pay their staff 25 euro cents (34 U.S. cents) per kilometre biked to work.
It is hoped that the bike-to-work incentive scheme will boost bike use for commuting by 50 per cent from 2.4 per cent of all work-home journeys, or about 800 million km, with an average distance of 3.5 km per journey.
