The new Hurricandy kit from Primal is certainly turning heads

If there’s one brand on the market to push the boundaries of road cycling conformity, it’s Primal.

Renowned for bright, eye-catching, and sometimes, bizarre designs, Primal certainly dare to be different and the new Primal Hurricandy women’s Evo kit is a testament to just that. Not relaxing on quality or performance, Primal continually take great pride in the development of their garments, but they just add their own twist on things when it comes to design.

Their new Hurricandy collection certainly caught us off-guard when it landed on the doorstep of TWC HQ, but nonetheless, we couldn’t wait to get out on the roads in it.

Primal Hurricandy Women’s Evo Kit

Well, where do your eyes want to look first?!

Physcadellic nostalgia washes over this kit in waves, taking your eyes on a frenzied mission in an attempt to take it all in. Black and white stripes. Swirling multi-colour explosions and non-linear joins on the panels… eh?

It’s bright and garish colours will certainly keep you visible on the roads, so if anything, it’s a great safety feature… albeit with a hypnotic lure. But, you can’t judge a kit by its colours so let’s dig a little deep beneath the surface at how this kit performs.

Starting with the Primal Hurricandy Evo jersey, it may look like it’s just for fun but woven into the Evo core is pure performance. Constructed from cutting-edge Q3 plaited, double-knit polyester fabric, this jersey has moisture control under wraps. It’s lightweight at 154 gsm and provides SPF 35+ protection.

The race fit design conforms to your body, creating a sleek and comfortable feel. There are three rear cargo pockets for storing your ride essentials and a silicone waist hem to grip onto your bib-shorts to provide ample coverage for when you’re low on the drops.

Available in sizes x.small to xxx.large, the Hurricandy jersey is available here for £65.

Accompanying the jersey are the Hurricandy bib-shorts which continue on with the same psychedelic theme as the side panels roughly align from top to bottom.

Constructed from thick 240gsm Vero fabric, these bib-shorts offer compression and abrasion resistance properties and SPF 50 protection. The 4-layer E6 Carbon Chamois uses Resistex technology with anti-static carbon fabric which promotes blood flow and the reduction of lactic acid, as well as being antibacterial and antimicrobial.

Aided by silicone cuff grippers, mesh straps and panels, these bib-shorts are equally as performance-driven as its jersey counterpart.

Primal Hurricandy Women’s Evo Kit: Verdict

Ok, admittedly, I was pretty taken aback by the harshness of the design and colourway when this kit first arrived. Blending strips and swirls and every colour known to our prism seemed a little too whacky for my liking.

However, after a few rides, the fit and feel of the Hurricandy kit began to dull the intensity of the initial wow-factor and, instead, gave way to a more acceptable level of appreciation. Yes, it turned heads and yes, it was met by repulsed facial expressions but it was also welcomed by many who admired its boldness and non-conforming nature.

For me, there’s certainly something about this design which makes me love it… I think. Although, I can’t deny the performance of the Evo collection to be nothing but some serious race-inspired kit and it performed great, even after long days in the saddle and a few washes along the way.
