Get Hairy this February with the “No Shave” Movement

Ready. Set. Grow!

One of the best things about cycling is having the freedom and comfort of being exactly who you want to be. Organisations around the globe have been working hard to promote body confidence, loving who you are and accepting all the flaws, warts and all.

As cyclists, we love to colour coordinate our kit with our bikes, there’s a great deal of personal grooming involved in the process, for both men and women. Cycling heritage is upheld by the strict following of rules: the Velominati.

“Rule 33: Legs are to be carefully shaved at all times” – Velominati

For most women, shaving your underarms and legs is considered more or less a routine beauty maintenance chore. However, the downstairs dilemma wages on. Social convention has influenced how we tend to our lady-gardens, with a variety of hair removal tools at our disposal. When it comes to cycling though, research has shown that going au naturel is better for preventing saddle discomfort.

Why has body hair removal become a big deal in today’s society though? In 1915, the first female razor was introduced with the promise of solving an “embarrassing personal problem” for women…

Since then women’s body hair has become viewed as somewhat unpleasant and unnatural, and something that needs to be removed. Get Hairy February is an Australian based movement which has been rapidly growing world wide support. It’s urging women to ditch hair-removal for one month and share their beautiful natural bodies with the world via social media.

The aim of the movement is to promote natural body confidence and also help raise funds for the Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia, a service which provides support for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Women around the world have already been uploading their photos with the social media tag: #GetHairyFebruary.

To make a donation, or to find out more information about the movement, head over to their website here.

So this February I'm ditching my razor for a really, really good cause. All donations go to The Full Stop foundation to provide support for those affected by domestic violence. Link to donation page in bio! #gethairyfebruary #bringonthefuzz #thatishairypitsnotthecops

Today I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I've signed up to participate in Get Hairy February. For the month of Feb I will not touch my razor, wax strips or tweezers to raise money and awareness about violence against women. This year I wanted to gain more self love and Get Hairy February is an amazing reason to love my body just the way it is. Last year in Australia, 71 women lost their lives due to domestic violence. Now, every 1 in 3 women have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault and that's way too damn high. You can read more about the cause on their website which you can get to right after you click the link in my bio and donate to this amazing cause on my page! ✨ #BeHappy #BeHairy #GetHairyFebruary https://gethairyfebruary.org/josievandoren (for facebook)
