The Specialized S-Works Prevail helmet will be a familiar sight to many. It is not only a popular choice amongst amateur riders, but also the helmet of choice for a lot of pro road racing teams.
The Prevail’s appearance will not instantly appeal to everyone, it is slightly more boxy than a lot of other designs and sits fairly high on the head – although I have to say I actually quite like the appearance and the fact that it is available in a range of the team colours they supply to – including the to-die-for Specialized lululemon design – makes them pretty darn cool.
We could talk about the pros and cons of appearance all day long. Performance is of course the most important thing. And the Prevail certainly delivered on this front.
I have worn a lot of helmets and can hands down say this is the most comfortable I have had the pleasure of wearing. At 185g, it is so light you will almost forget you have a lid on at all. The fitting system is also brilliant thanks to a five position height adjustment setting and a dial fit system at the rear.
The fit system also allows for a ponytail port – basically a gap large enough to pop your hair through integrated into the fitting system – good news for those who hate the feeling of a low bun or plait around their necks.
It would also be hard to talk about this helmet without discussing the ventilation which is also superb. Two vents run along the front of the helmet which then connect to deep channel vents the whole way along the top of the helmet making it suitable for even the warmest riding conditions.
Verdict: This helmet is not cheap but if you have the cash to spend and are you’re after an all-round performer we really cannot fault it.
