Last night we saw the Team GB track squad continue on their success in Rio, as sprinters Becky James and Katy Marchant progressed to quarter finals and Laura Trott dominated in the Omnium rounds.

James and Marchant will race this afternoon, in the 1/4, having successfully got through the 1/8 finals. The final final – which will decide the Gold, Silver and Bronze medallist, takes place this evening.

James was the fastest in qualifying, and beat France’s Virginie Cueff, riding around the outside to beat her to the line from behind. Marchant raced German trackie Miriam Welte, who surprised her with an early start to the sprint, but the GB rider chased her opponent down.

In the Omnium, Trott looks on course to protect her Olympic title. She’d already taken second in the scratch race, and won the individual pursuit.

However, it was in the third of the six disciplines that Trott showed her absolute prowess – the elimination race. Here, the last rider is pulled out of the pack on the bell lap, until there’s only two left to battle it out in a sprint.

Trott found herself alongside Belgium rider Julien D’Hoore on the final bell, but was able to demonstrate that her legs were still well and truly fresh – sprinting clear of D’Hoore with time to wave to the crowds before the line.

The result means Trott has 188 points overall, with D’Hoore next in line with 110. Still to come this evening are the kilometre time trial, the flying lap and the points race.
