It was all going so well for the Rabo Liv team in the Team Time Trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain yesterday. But alas in the final kilometres of the 36km course, it appeared that glory was not meant to be.
Team member Annemiek van Vleuten, who was leading the team clipped the foot of a metal barrier as the team rounded a bend on the course which resulted in the demise of all but one member of the team.
The girls were riding at 50-60km per hour at the time of the crash which resulted in two of the riders needing further treatment in hospital.
The video below shows the view of the crash from the team car and the post crash reactions of the Rabo Liv team.
Thankfully Marianne Vos who is hot favourite in the individual events was not involved in the crash as she had already been dropped by her teammates.
The top spot on the day went to Specialized Lululemon with Orica-AIS finishing second and Astana BePink in third.
The individual time trial will take place on Tuesday with the hotly anticipated road race on Saturday. If you want to watch all the action live, check out TWC’s guide to the World Road Championships.
