Rabo Liv rider Annemiek van Vleuten finished first at the prologue to the 2014 Giro Rosa which kicked off last night in Caserta just north of Naples. Van Vleuten averaged over 50km/h on the 2.05km course, finishing ahead of her teammates. Rabo Liv really proved they are the team to beat at this year’s event, nabbing the first four spots in the opener.
20 teams, and 157 girls in total lined out for start of the 10-day race in Italy last night, with the first rider Davie Tuslaite leading the proceedings at 8.30pm. ALthough short, the course was not without its challenges – low light at sunset and old Italian flagstones and cobbles made for an interesting ride.
Van Vleuten finished in 2 minutes 26 seconds, 0.81 seconds ahead of Marianne Vos.
Today will see Stage 1 of the Giro Rosa which will consist of 11 laps of a 8.6km loop in Santa Maria a Vico.
