A speed limit of 20mph is set to be enforced on more than 80% of Edinburgh’s roads, including the entire city centre. The move is part of an initiative by the council to improve safety and encourage more people to walk or cycle.
To further encourage more people to leave the car at home, a plan to ban cars entirely outside 11 schools across Edinburgh around school drop-off and collection times is also being explored.
Support for the new speed limit was strongly supported during recent consultations especially among parents with children under the age of 16.
If proposals are given the go ahead, it is expected that work on the schemes will be underway by the end of the year.
This is another very positive step in the UK to encourage safe roads, thus resulting in a lot more bikes and far fewer cars. Our eyes are peeled to see which city will be next to follow suit.
