Review: DZR Link Charcoal SPD Shoes

By Amy Ram

There’s no doubt that there will come a point in a female cyclist’s life that they decide that they want to ride with SPD compatible trainers. And to be frank our choices are very much limited. But these DZR’s have come to our rescue in style, quite literally.

The DZR Link Charcoal is at the heart of urban cycling, making going to the pub or restaurant whilst wearing clipped in shoes no longer an issue. And looking like a courier is no longer a worry!

8 of the Most Perfect Dresses for Commuting by Bike

I chose the charcoal grey high tops with white soles; the look and shape of the shoes match the same as your standard high top trainer, no less wider or bulkier. They look great with a pair of tight skinnys, chinos or jean shorts.

The velcro strap on the DZR Link Charcoal is there for a reason, not a fashion statement, however in my eyes they could have possibly done without it. However, they do allow the shoe to feel very secure when riding and help to keep the laces trapped in firmly.

When your shoes arrive you need to mount your cleats yourself. You have to cut the clearly marked panel with a very sharp knife so the marked base pops off. But please do be careful when cutting, it really was not easy, I had to get my boyfriend to help and this took a good half an hour just to get the rubber panel of!

Once they were finally off (phew!), I simply had screw the cleats in like you would with any other cycling shoe which was very simple.

What’s so ideal about the DZR Link SPD shoes is that the cleats are imbedded into the shoe deep enough that you’re able to walk around as normal, without looking like a penguin!  This makes my life incredibly easier.

The shoe itself fits well when riding, the soles felt good and stiff and there was little loss of power. Made our of a fake leather material, they’re very practical as they dry quickly and enable the rain to just slide off!

8 Pairs of Stylish SPD Cycling Shoes You Can Actually Walk In

I normally ride with the Louis Garneau Air-Flex Shoe which boats so much breathability, so I did notice after a heavy cycle that my feet started to sweat.

For those on longer 15 miles + cycles, I perhaps advice ‘no’ to these shoes, but for your average commuter, these are the dream.

With these, there’s no more worrying about pitching up to the pub with all your friends looking like you have just cycled the TDF!

Thumbs up from me all round, these are definitely worth the purchase.

Pros

 – Very comfortable.

–  Look great.

– Much more effective than wearing normal trainers or using toe straps.

Con

– Feet started to sweat a bit more than usual on a heavy ride because of the fake leather material.
