On Test: Velo X Cyclomount Phone Holder

We took this new handlebar phone mount out for a test ride

We’re always on the lookout for a secure phone mount to hunt those QoM’s with, and record our cycling stats.

With the growing popularity of fitness applications such as Strava and Runtastic, you can now record and track your rides to monitor your progress. They are great for creating fitness plans and helping you train for those all important races and challenges.

iPhone and Android Cycling Apps

Fortunately modern technology has allowed us to use these fitness applications via our mobile devices, without being forced to purchase additional tech. For this reason, there’s been a growing demand for lightweight and secure mobile phone handlebar mounts.

We’ve been road testing the new Clycomount phone holder from Velo X to see if it meets our stat hunting demands.

First Look

The handle bar phone mount uses a clamp and strap method to secure the phone in place. Upon taking it out of the box, I immediately noticed how light it is in the hand, which is great for not adding unnecessary grams to the ride, and not causing any balance problems on the bars.

Included in the box is the mount itself fitted with a red silicone strap, Allen key, bolt, nut, additional silicone strap and spacers for adjusting the fit to the handlebar width.

On Test

I fitted my Cyclemount phone holder to my road bike, for QoM hunting. For the test ride, I used my iPhone 5c which is fitted with a silicone protective case.

Fixing the mount to my handlebars was easy, and barely took minutes with the Allen key, bolt and spacers provided. The spacers are soft and supple, so they protect you bars from scratches and damage, but also enable a precise fit.

Once the mount is securely fitted to the handlebars, the spring arms widen to clamp the phone in place, and the silicone pads help secure and protect the phone further. The red silicone strap is then pulled over each corner of the device to provide additional security.

Now the mount is fitted, and phone is secure, it’s time to rotate the device to a suitable position for your riding. The ball joint acts as a pivot, allowing full maneuverability. Once you find the ideal position, you can screw the ball join in place to prevent movement.

Overall

Providing you’ve tightened everything correctly, there’s no reason why this mount should move or wobble. I was incredibly surprised at how secure it was, even when riding over some uneven and gravel surfaces.

I love the ball joint incorporated into the mount. I found it really useful for making those fine tweaks to the position of my phone, so that I could easily see the screen at all times.

It may not be as minimal in size as some other phone mounts on the market, but for £20 it’s reasonably priced and well made.
