Evelyn Stevens is the new Women’s UCI Hour Record holder – having ridden 47.980km over sixty minutes at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center Velodrome today. We’ve got pictures and more detail coming soon – so stay tuned – but we simply couldn’t wait to share the news.

The Boels Dolmans rider surpassed the previous record of 46.882km, set by Bridie O’Donnell just last month, by over 1,000 metres to take the record at the 333-metre cement track.

Stevens is the fourth woman to take on combat with the Hour record since the UCI rule change which allowed the use of more modern bicycles, whilst eight men have tried their hand. The attempt was announced only last month, at the Boels Dolmans team launch.

The 32-year-old came to cycling much later in life, having first enjoyed a career on Wall Street – her strengths have always been in solo and endurance events. As well as being a five time UCI World Champs medalist, she competed in the 2012 Olympics, and we’re told is now looking to medal in Rio.

Ever approachable, ever appreciative Evie said in an interview following her amazing feat: “The coolest thing about today is all the support.”

The incredible effort comes on the same day that Boels Dolmans rider and World Champ Lizzie Armitstead soloed to the win in her first race wearing the rainbow jersey at Omloop het Nieuwsblad, in Ghent, Belgium, with team mate Chantel Blaak in second.

We’ve got pictures and an hourly account of Evelyn’s preparation leading up to the big effort coming soon  – stay tuned!
