There was a flurry of excitement yesterday as Laura Trott took the National Road Championship Title in a nail biting finish.
With just 5km to go in the 101km race, it looked like Lizzie Armitstead would defend her title as she maintained a ten second lead on the first four laps of the 8km finishing circuit. But the Wiggle Honda rider proved to be a force to be reckoned with.
From the start of the race, Armitstead tried to avoid a sprint, first attacking to form the lead bunch which consisted of 13 riders. She then attacked again in the final stages in a bid to win solo. But the force of the Wiggle Honda team ultimately proved too much.
Trott took to the start line with four of her Wiggle Honda teammates, a marked difference compared to Armitstead who has just one British teammate on the Boels-Dolman team following Emma Trott’s retirement in May.
Despite holding a ten second lead in the final stages of the race, Armitstead was chased down in the last 5km when Dani King expertly marshalled Trott onto Armitstead’s wheel.
Trott crossed the line, adding her first major road race title to an already impressive trophy cabinet: “It’s such an amazing feeling, it’s up there with winning a world championships for me,” Trott said.
