Katie Archibald of the Pearl Izumi Sports Tour International team has grabbed gold at the Milk Race 2014. Taking place in Nottingham, Archibald managed to cross the line just in front of Wiggle Honda team superstar, Laura Trott and her teammate Charlotte Becker who came in second and third place respectively. 

The prestigious and historic race was revived last year after a 20-year break, with the organisers adding a women’s edition of the Milk Race for the first time.

This year it was a tightly fought race between members of the Wiggle Honda team and Archibald. “The team led from the front and, along with Dani (King) and Charlotte (Becker), we had three of the four riders in the breakaway and took the team’s second double podium here in as many years. The race has a great pedigree with many of the sports’ greatest names having won here in the past, and there were some very strong riders out there today,” said double Olympic champion Laura Trott after the event.

Between 1958 and 1993, The Milk Race was the most prestigious cycling event in the British Calendar and the Milk Marketing board’s sponsorship of the event remains the longest association the sport has ever had. Judging by the calibre of the riders that turned out to compete, the event has not failed to reignite the success of its hay day: “It’s great to win such a prestigious event in front of such amazing crowds. Here’s hoping The Milk Race returns again next year!” exclaimed triumphant Archibald.

The women’s top five finishers were as follows:

3.      Charlotte Becker, Wiggle Honda
4.      Elinor Barker, Wiggle Honda
5.      Katie Curtis, Starley Primal Pro Cycling
