With cycling fast becoming one of the nation's favourite hobbies, we have scoured the events calendars to bring you the best of 2014.

Whether you're just starting out on your cycling journey, are an avid tourer, or just enjoy being a weekend warrior we've got a road cycling event for you.

Every level of rider is catered for and we've even thrown in a couple of our favourites to mix things up a little.

[part title="Macmillan Cycletta"]

Macmillan Cycletta

Best for: Beginners, fun and getting your mates involved

Highlights: As the UK's leading series of female-only bike rides, Macmillan Cycletta events give you the chance to cycle with like-minded women. Organised by Human Race, you're in for a treat with well-stocked feed stations and a free Macmillan Cycletta spa to help you unwind after a tough ride. If you're lucky there's also the chance to ride with the event ambassador Victoria Pendleton.

Locations: South Wales, Bedfordshire, New Forest, Cheshire, Scotland and Surrey

London 2 Brighton  BHF

Best for: Charity fundraising, and that feel good factor

Highlights: Every year in June, the British Heart Foundation host their flagship cycling fundraising event – the epic London to Brighton ride. British Cycling’s Breeze initiative create a team annually to ride the London to Brighton route, so why not get involved and raise money for a worthy cause too?

Best for: Getting your friends together and seeing cities in a new light

Highlights: A rare chance to cycle through the iconic streets of your capital in the dark of night without the hustle and bustle. Enjoy the views of the cities' top sights from your saddle. Both Edinburgh and London events are suitable for all levels of riders, with entertainment and fuel-stops throughout the journey to keep you pedalling on!

[part title="L'Eroica Britannia"]


Best for: Indulging yourself in everything velo-vintage

Highlights: This is the first year the event dubbed 'the most handsome bike race in the World' has come to our fair shores. An offshoot of L'Eroica, the fabled Italian sportive will use the lanes, rugged tracks, and magnificent scenery of the Peak District National Park - it's going to be spectacular. Riders need to adhere to the 'Good to Knows' race day rules that include riding only 'Heroic' bicycles, road racing bikes, built before 1987.

Best for: Your first attempt at long-distance cycling on consecutive days

Highlights: As one of the UK's growing number of multi-day sportives, the Tour of Wessex is a chance to test your endurance cycling mettle. In its eighth year, the sportive sees three 100-plus mile distances held on leg-burning consecutive days for the energetic. Never fear, all are catered for, with the Tour of Wessex holding a selection of shorter distances to suit newcomers. You're also able to pick and choose what rides you feel like doing on the day.

Best for: Experienced riders who want to enjoy a taste of the pro's life and your first European sportive

Highlights: Running for over 20 years, La Marmotte is billed as the 'daddy of all sportives' and is definitely not for the faint-hearted. With a route containing almost 5000m of climbing on closed roads through the French Alps, you'll get a true taste of cycling on the continent.

NB: Be warned there's a rather major event taking place back on our fair shores the same weekend, it's one you may not want to miss.

Best for: A fun girls day out on the bikes

Highlights: Action DIVA rides are staged at selected RIDE100 events. In 2014 there will be 7 Action DIVA events and Davina McCall keen cyclist and their ambassador will be riding the Sussex Action DIVA. As the women's stages are set within a bigger event, the atmosphere will be electric and you'll get cheered a long the way.

Locations: Warwickshire, Sussex, Trossachs, Chiltern, York, Essex and Buckinghamshire

Dates: 27 April, 11 May, 15 June, 22 June, 17 August, 31 August and 14 September respectively

Distances: 3 distances offered at every location, varies from 21 - 106 miles

Best for: Thrill seeking endurance riders

Highlights: When you bear in mind that the pros in the Tour de France take 21 days to race a meagre 2131 miles, it's incredible to think that soloists in the Race Across Europe (RACE) have just 15 days to tackle a whopping 2926 miles. Breathtaking - literally! This is a great way to have the adventure of a lifetime organised by someone else.

London to Paris

Best for: Those who want to challenge themselves on the bike while fundraising and having fun

Highlights: Over a long weekend, you can complete an amazing charity challenge, setting off from the UK's capital, through the idyllic English countryside over to rural France and on to the heart of Paris, finishing under the iconic Eiffel Tower.
